Description

Ryan graduated from the University of South Florida in 2022. He transitioned from intern to full-time software engineer in January of 2023. At the time of writing, he has about 1 year of experience in the industry.

One thing he has noticed is that it is very difficult for software engineers to get a job in today's market. Some people can apply to hundreds of jobs to just be denied. He was lucky in that he was able to secure a job relatively easy, but he sometimes worries how new developers would be able to get their foot in the door.

The role he has currently been working has been particularly interesting because instead of being a traditional software development role, it turned out to be more of a "late stage" software maintenance role. In theory, this is a fine role for a new developer.

In practice, it has been an uphill battle. He found that there was incomplete documentation and he would be asked to fix software that he knew nothing about. From what you can find online, this seems pretty common in the industry.

Anyways, these circumstances led Ryan to gain some skills to search through large code bases to find problematic code statements. He's also had to learn how to ask better questions. He's had to learn what questions to ask and who to ask them to.

All in all, Ryan is just a new guy in the software industry that's just trying to learn more each day.
